The Californians For All College Corps Fellowship is a brand new program that aims to help college students pay for their education while engaging them in meaningful service opportunities that build leadership skills and civic responsibility. It is the first state service opportunity open to AB540 eligible Dreamers and it provides up to $10,000 towards their education when they commit to serve for a year. The program is a partnership between California Volunteers, the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research, and 45 partner campuses across the state³.
Aim of College Corps Fellowship
The program has three core goals:
- Engage college students in solving problems in their communities by placing them with community-based organizations working in key local priorities.
- Help students from diverse backgrounds graduate college on time and with less debt by providing them with a living stipend and an education award.
- Support the work of community-based organizations by increasing their capacity and impact.
Overview of College Corps Fellowship
College Corps Fellows will be placed with more than 600 community partner organizations across the state working in three focus areas: K-12 education, climate action, and food insecurity. Fellows in K-12 education will serve as tutors or mentors to public school students, especially those who have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Fellows in climate action will support projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase resilience to climate change, or promote environmental justice. Fellows in food insecurity will help address hunger and malnutrition among vulnerable populations by supporting food banks, pantries, or gardens.
Benefits of College Corps Fellowship
As part of the service experience, College Corps Fellows will receive the following benefits:
- Up to $10,000 – which includes a living stipend of up to $7,000 throughout the service term and an additional $3,000 Education Award upon completion of 450 service hours.
- Academic credit (amount and type to be determined by each partner campus).
- A real-world job experience and skills to add to their resume.
- Access to training, networking, and professional development opportunities.
- A sense of pride and accomplishment in working toward a common purpose alongside young leaders from across the state.
